How to use the assignment system
Some course directors may choose to implement the assignment management system. For those students who are required to submit their assignments on line here is a brief guide.
Log onto the system at www.medicineatotago.com
As with all our guides, you should log into the teaching system from the main website at www.medicineatotago.com. Then use the left hand menu to navigate to the Moodle Teaching Platform (shown above) and then navigate to your course.
How to access an assignment
Here we are using AVMX721 as an example course. Individual course directors are at liberty to change the setup of their courses to suit the material or their own teaching preferences - so don't expect your course to look exactly the same.
There are a couple of ways of accessing the Assignment Activity modules. In the example above we can see those associated with Module 1 and 2. Click on the assignment that you want to view / update.
The assignment module in detail
1) Here is where the assignment itself appears. There may be links to other material, pictures and video in this area that you may need to review.
2) The system allows you to upload a draft of your assignment. At the moment this will allow you to upload a total of three files which can be subsequently downloaded, amended and uploaded again as many times as necessary. This is actually quite useful if you want to access your assignment when you are away from home, do some work on it and re upload it. If you choose to use the system in this way your files will be listed in this space.
3) Upload your files (draft or final submission) here. Use the browse button to locate the file (or files) on your computer and then click 'Upload this file' to send the file to the server. It will appear in the list above.
4) Some assignments will have a 'Notes' box. This can be used to leave yourself notes about your assignment or, at the time of submitting your work for marking, to send your tutor additional information. Because your files will be available on the server, should you need feedback or guidance from your tutors before making a final submission simply drop them an email, with details of your question and they will be able to log in, see your draft and add their comments in the notes box (or send it to you by email).
5) Clicking the 'Edit' button will allow you to enter (or edit) the notes section.
6) When you have completed your assignment you can click the 'Send for marking' button. This has the effect of locking the assignment (so that no further changes can be made) and sending an email to your tutor to inform them that your assignment is ready to mark. They will then log into Moodle where they can download your paper and provide feedback and a grade. You will be sent an email when this process is complete and you will be able to log in and read the feedback and see your grade.
Alternative way of accessing assignments
The 'Activities' Menu provides direct access to lists of activities of a particular type. Click on the 'Assignments' Item to show a complete list of assignments available on the paper.
All the assignments in a list
1) Click on the assignment in this list.
2) When you have submitted an assignment it will be seen here. Clicking the link will take you to your submitted assignment and critique when available.
3) Your grade will be displayed here.
How to see your paper grade report
Use the administration menu on your course homepage to access your Grade Report. You will note that you can also access your profile from this menu.
Here is an example of a User Grade Report
This is an example of a User report - you will notice I haven't submitted any assignments yet!
Summary
This guide has covered accessing the assignment modules, uploading files, marking and appraisal. We have finished with a quick look at the gradebook report. More on grading in another guide.
