How to update your Moodle Profile

When you have logged on to the main site and clicked the menu link for the Moodle Teaching Platform you will be taken to the main screen shown here.
Note that if this is the first time you have logged onto the system you will be presented with your own profile page and asked to complete a few mandatory fields. Although this may seem irritating it is in fact very important, both because it allows your fellow students and the faculty to get to know a little about you but also because if you dont set your location and time zone settings correctly the site may not work as expected!
If you are not immediately taken to your profile page click your name in the top right of the moodle welcome page.

Updating your profile will provide fellow students and tutors some background on you and help build a learning 'community' amongst students taking each paper. when you are on your course page you can view other students or faculty profiles as well as seeing where they are in the world on a google-style map. Some information that you might like to share includes what you are currently doing professionally, why you decided to take the paper, what your plans are for the future any previous experience in the field and even your interests and hobbies! This is a screenshot of the profile update page that you will be taken to when you first log onto the Moodle site. It can also be updated at any time by clicking on your name (in the top right hand of the moodle screen). Belw you can find a summary of the basic options that you need to fill in - we hope that they are pretty straight forward.

Profile fields in detail

1) You will note that your Name and Email address are greyed out - you cannnot change them here. If you need to change your email account or password you should go to the main site and click on the 'Your account' link on the menu (here) Please remember that if you do change your account details we would like to know so that we can make changes in your Oceanbrowser login - necessary for you to be able to log into VOIP conferences. On the whole, if you can keep your email address and password the same for the duration of the course it would help.
2) You can choose to disable your email address, but this would mean that the site would not be able to send you mail and is not recommended.
3) Please enter the city or town where you are studying.
4) It is very important to select the correct time zone here. If you can find one with a city that is in the same time zone as you are studying then please select it here. It is a peculiarity of the system that means that it seems that a city selected time zone works better than a generic time zone offset. For your information the serverstime zone is set to GMC / UTC (what do these terms mean?). When you have selected the correct time zone then timed entries on the site should work correctly for you. Most tutors schedule their activities in GMT and you should check that you know exactly when your teleconferences and lectures are taking place. One good way of doing this is by using the timezone conversion tools found at www.timeanddate.com
5) Please fill in a short biography for other students and your tutors.

1) You have the option to upload an image to go with your profile page and be displayed when it is viewed. Although the system will allow huge images to be uploaded please dont! An average user picture is between 50 - 150K in size. For best results you should choose a 'head and shoulders' passport type image (although some students prefer to be rather more creative!). This is not compulsory but greatly adds to the visual appearance of your profile and the site.
2) You have the option to add a list of your other interests in this field, although this is not required.
3) Clicking the 'Advancd' button reveals a range of other fields that you may want to fill in. Remember that any information that you provide here will be seen by other students and your tutors.
4) Please fill in your Region / State under the Address Section. We will be expanding this area in due course but for the time being it provides information to the mapping functionality of the site.
5) Remember to click the 'Update profile' button at the bottom of the page when you are done!
